Redact PDF

1. 1Choose a PDF.
2. 2Drag rectangles with the mouse over everything that should be blacked out in the preview. Alternatively, search for terms such as names, IBANs or email addresses and have all matches marked.
3. 3Page through the document with the arrows and check the marks. Use the red cross to remove individual areas.
4. 4Click “Redact”.

Enter one or more terms, separated by commas. Case does not matter. Every match is marked with a rectangle that you can remove like any other mark.

A black rectangle on top of text is not enough because the text would stay in the file and could be copied. qPDF works differently:

• Every page with marks is rendered as an image, the black areas are burned in and the page is replaced by this image.
• The original text, vectors and images underneath are no longer in the file afterwards.
• Pages without marks stay unchanged. Title, author and other metadata of the original are not carried over.

Scanned pages contain no text, so the search finds nothing there. Redact them with rectangles. Always check the result by opening the new file and trying to select the text under the black areas.
